The company that invented Twizzlers is one of the oldest confectionery firms in the United States. Twizzlers was first made in the year 1929, by the Young and Smylie company, which changed to Y&S as its trademark in 1870 and was founded in 1845. It has been reported in 2013 that over 1 million miles of Twizzlers are produced every year. Only the black licorice Twizzlers appear to contain licorice extract. However they do look much like licorice candy, and licorice flavor was the original flavor of Twizzlers. Twizzlers do not contain licorice extract, nor advertise having being made from licorice. Twizzlers resemble licorice, however technically Twizzlers are not licorice. Twizzlers is a candy made from corn syrup, wheat flour, sugar, cornstarch, and in smaller amounts palm oil, salt, artificial flavor, glycerin, citric acid, potassium sorbate, Red 40, and soy lecithin.
